    Second Place for Cardiff Nomads

    The long established match fishing team of Cardiff Nomads went to Oxford and came back having done themselves proud!

     

    JOHN Taylor came out on top when the final round of the Oxford Summer League was fished on the Thames at Medley and Folly.

    Taylor (Tubertini Ap-ollo) topped the pile with 20lb 6oz, having drawn the Perch bay on Medley.

    He had around 8lb of roach, perch and hybrids on the pole and caster with the rest of his weight on the waggler with tares on the hook over hemp feed.

    Alex Graham (ISIS) was second with 18.1.0 after two chub plus a net of roach on the pole and caster over groundbait and caster loose feed.

    Chris Telling (16.10.0) came third ahead of Drennan Banbury Gunsmiths pair Tony Hobbs (14.10.0) and Geoff Lewendon (11.7.0).

    TEAM RESULT 1 Drennan Banbury Gunsmiths Blue 33pts, 2= Drennan Banbury Gunsmiths Red Isis 32.

    FINAL STANDINGS Team: 1 Drennan Red 170pts, 2 Drennan Blue 168, 3 Turners 146.

    Individual: 1 T Hobbs (Drennan) 35pts.

    Andy Wiffen triumphed in the tenth round of the FTB Oxford Carp League with 128lb at a very wet Boddingon Reservoir.

    He caught plenty of carp to 10lb using a pellet feeder with a 11mm pellet hookbait.

    Andy Benwell (FTB) was runner-up, catching 15 carp, including one which weighed 17lb using a pellet feeder at long range.

    Result: 1 A Wiffen 128.0.0, 2 A Benwell (FTB) 121.0.0, 3 M Robinson 92.12.0.

    Mark Ward bagged seven carp to win Marston AC’s match at Clattercote Reservoir, using method feeder and boilie to land 34.8.0.

    Result: 1 M Ward 34.8.0, 2 G Bradshaw 21.8.0, 3 A Tomkins 20.8.0. Stuart Harrop (Turners) made the most of a end peg draw near Donkey Bridge to win the Abingdon Mayor’s Cup in very wet conditions on the Thames at Abingdon.

    He caught 15.4.0 of roach and skimmers on caster over groundbait on the pole.

    Steve Malone won Tackley Sports Club’s match on the River Cherwell at Northbrook with 5lbs 15½oz, mainly of roach, on maggots and worm alternating pole and feeder.

    Giant Carp in Cardiff

    A father and son who were enjoying a quiet fishing weekend in Cardiff were “awestruck” when they landed a giant carp that weighed twice as much as a small dog.

    Tudor Prosser was fishing in Bute East Dock with his 10-year-old son Logan when the 40Ib monster took the bait.

    “I saw it in the water and I thought to myself ‘That is a proper big fish’,” said the 36-year-old from Culverhouse Cross, who owns a security training company.

    “It was a bit of a shock because it was such an unexpected catch,” he added.

    The giant carp – a grass carp – weighed in at 40lb 2oz, which is more than five times the weight of an average newborn baby.

    “When I caught it it took flight and went into the reed bed but when it realised it had been hooked it gave up and didn’t struggle. It was like a dead weight on the end of the rod,” said Tudor.

    “Logan was great. He had the camera and he helped me take pictures of it but I think he was totally gobsmacked,” he added.

    The pair had spent two hours finding the perfect spot to fish as the water was full of algae.

    Tudor called the catch “a huge surprise” as the fishing community did not realise there were such giant carp in the docks.

    The dad of three, who has been angling for 13 years, said he believed the catch could set a new Welsh record but explained that official records have not been kept in recent years as grass carp are not a native species in the country.

    “Carp fishing is a close-knit community,” he said. “We are all friends and nobody I have spoken to has come across anything bigger. It is a big fish.”

    But Tudor is no stranger to big catches. During a fishing holiday in France last autumn he caught an enormous mirror carp that weighed 65lb 12oz.

    “That was a lake in the Champagne-Ardenne region,” he said. “It was the fish of a lifetime. I could travel all over the world fishing and I might never catch one like that again.”

    According to the Angler’s Mail the biggest grass carp ever caught in Britain weighed 52lb 8oz and was caught by a fisherman in Berkshire in August 2012.

    Meanwhile angling website Land Big Fish claims that the biggest grass carp caught anywhere in the world weighed 73lb and was caught in Guntersville Reservoir in Alabama in April 2012.

    After catching the fish Tudor and Logan weighed it and took photographs before putting it back in the dock.

    Moc Morgan, chairman of the Federation of Welsh Anglers, said: “Forty pounds is quite an achievement – especially for a fish caught in the docks.”

    A 70-year-old angler who suffers from seasickness has landed what could be the largest shark caught in Welsh waters.

    The porbeagle shark weighing about 300lbs (136kg) was caught by George Woodward off the Pembrokeshire coast.

    It was so big it took almost two hours to pull in before being released back into the sea.

    Mr Woodward, of Herefordshire, said he was exhausted at the end but it had been a long-held ambition.

    “Everyone has a boyhood dream,” he said. “When I was a little kid of about four-and-a-half I thought I wouldn’t mind shark fishing.”

    But his ambition always looked likely to be thwarted because he felt sick whenever he set foot in a boat.

    Luckily his fishing trip from Milford Haven took place in particularly calm waters – and it would become memorable for other reasons.

    “I was beginning to realise there was something a bit serious on the end (of the line),” he said.

    “There was a big oil tanker near us and I thought it could be caught on that!

    “We got it closer to the boat and an hour-and-a-half had gone. It was something out of the ordinary.

    Something special

    “I was beginning to think I wished it would fall off because I was in a bit of pain.”

    But with the help of his fellow anglers and boat skipper Andrew Alsop, the shark was eventually wrestled on to the boat.

    And those on board knew it was something special.

    “They measured it and they were saying it was close to or over the Welsh record,” he said.

    Professional angler Martin Bowler, who organised the trip and helped land the catch, said he was aware of Mr Woodward’s dream of catching a shark.

    “I said to him ‘come on George, I will help you get a shark’,” he said.

    He said the largest shark previously caught off the Welsh coast was about 296lbs (134kg).

    Mr Alsop, who runs angling trips off Milford Haven, said he was now waiting to hear if the shark would enter the record books.

    He added: “Back in the early days no-one would have thought of catching sharks off Milford Haven.

    “It’s definitely on the map now for shark fishing. We catch and release them – people come from all over the world to come to try and catch sharks.”

  • Youngsters put their lives at risk by illegal fishing at River Taff weir

    The dangers of illegal fishing in the River Taff at Blackweir have been highlighted after three youngsters were spotted standing on the weir with their fishing rods.

    Natural Resources Wales Fishing has said that fishing at Blackweir contravenes byelaws that does not permit fishing immediately upstream or downstream of the majority of weirs on the River Taff. Anyone caught contravening these byelaws could face a substantial fine.

    A concerned angler caught the trio on camera and sent the picture to Natural Resources Wales (NRW) – formally the Environment Agency Wales.

    The dangerous act comes just weeks after adults were spotted pushing children in buggies across the Blackweir in an attempt to sit alongside the salmon jump.

    Illegal fishing has the potential to damage the amount of fish in the Taff as one salmon can lay up to 6000 eggs.

    An officer from NRW said: “We want to thank this vigilant angler for taking action and reporting this offence to us. Illegal fishing damages fish numbers in our rivers and spoils angling for others.

    “These young people are not only breaking the law, they are also putting themselves in danger as weirs can be extremely dangerous if they were to fall in.

    “We patrol areas on a regular basis but we do need the support of legitimate anglers or anyone who is out and about to call our incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60 so we can investigate.”

    We are beginning to think that Cardiff Carp fishing is one of the best kept secrets in in UK!

    It is true that 40lb fish are rare in Cardiff area but regular 30lb fish can be caught at multiple locations and then we have the fast growing jewel in the crown. Carp fishing in Cardiff Bay.

    Glamorgan Anglers Club are reporting that regular anglers in the Bay are catching personal best carp with a report of 30 lb being a recent catch.

    We all know that time and food are the recipe for big fish, what we may be overlooking though is temperature.  Cardiff carp ponds probably produce larger fish that their counterparts in the valleys simply because it’s a bit warmer nearer the coast.

    So where can Cardiff carp be found? Well we have already mentioned one location, Cardiff Bay , cardiff carp fishing locations where fishing is permitted can be found on the map.

    Within a ten mile radius we can add 2 more. Cardiff Carp lakes do not come more central than Roath Park Lake. It is perhaps an unlikely spot for a spot of Cardiff carp fishing, and we are not talking about the Koi Carp in the conservatory!!

    The second is Lamby lake is situated off Lamby way and is home to some of the larger Cardiff carp, there are plenty of fish over 20lb and 30lb in there too. Fishing is not restricted to different types of carp but includes perch, tench and golden rudd with their stunning colours.

    Situated off the A470 and close to the M4 the shop is located on the Taffs Well industrial estate, it’s close to ‘Travis Perkins’ an in the same building as ‘Cash 4 cars’ . Mike Jones and Simon Spinola offered a very friendly welcome and its layout was fantastically organised. the ranges offered are Taska and Nash, Mike is a consultant for Nash and has vast knowledge of Cardiff Carp scene.

    The business started  2006 however, the shop has only been in existence since May 2013. It has wider aims than just being a business though, as evidenced by its dedicated team of field testers, who fish in England and Wales, testing products and offering advice, only where wanted of course!

    The goal is to promote carp fishing in Wales through social media and personal contact, Mike is generous with his tips and advice and is available every weekend.

    So what products are popular at the moment? It turns out that the big new selling item is the Diamond Hook Files, made by Taska.  But the shop stocks every imaginable accessory for carp fishing including carp mats to protect your catch on the bank.

    One of the most pleasing things about visiting or living in Cardiff as a fisherman is that there is a large variety of manners to enjoy the sport a fishing boat charter being one of them.

    The Bristol channel is on of the most tidal regions in the world so taking a fishing boat charter will nearly always bring you a productive day, irrespective of the time of year.

    The Bristol Channel is famous for its Cod but you also need to remember that with 3 islands in the Bristol Channel, Steepholm Flatholm and Lundy the variation in habitat and depth mean that Conger, Bass, several Rays, Smoothounds and Tope are also available.

    The Cod season starts towards the end of August and continues to mid May.

    Optimum fishing is October to January, followed by March and April (spring run) where fish feed up before migrating to the Irish Sea for summer.

    As Cardiff Bay has matured as a watercourse the fish population has diversified and the habitats developed currently Cardiff Bay fishing is thriving.

    Cardiff Bay fishing of the coarse variety  is now very healthy with chub, perch, roach, carp, rudd and bream now present. Unsurprisingly with this range of fish our old freshwater predator the pike is also present to occasionally thin out the population.

    Should you wish to thin out the pike population, or any of the species just mentioned then you would need a Cardiff Bay fishing permit to do so. These are available from the Harbour authority.

    Cardiff Bay fishing is available from Hamadryad Park on the River Taff, the locations are from Grangemoor Park and Sanatorium Park on the Ely River. You can also fish from the Barrage Embankment

    Cardiff Bay fishing platforms are just above Penarth road and are suitable for all interested in angling. There are also four purpose built angling platforms on the River Ely just above Penarth Road suitable for disabled anglers.

    If you are after a bit of salt-water Cardiff Bay fishing then the Northern side of the barrage has provision.

    The harbor authority is the source of licenses, the requirement being a Cardiff Harbour Authority Fishing License and an Environment Agency Rod License. This applies to all anglers over the age of 12.

    Cardiff Bay fishing - cod

    Licenses for Cardiff Bay fishing are available from the Cardiff Bay Visitor Centre and Channel View Leisure Centre. You must show your license to the bailiff if requested.

    A lot of the tackle and bait shops also provide a license saving an extra trip, you can get legal and your worms at the same time!

    If you can catch them there are also some pretty big mullet in the Bay so look out for them.

    Check the map and look out for signs indicating where you can participate in Cardiff Bay fishing. Its daylight hours only so Dawn to dusk is the rule.

    Use the Car Parks around the bay, if you park on side street make sure its permitted a ticket at the end of the day is one catch you want to avoid.
